British reporter Ben Ellery and photographers Steve Burton and John McLellan were investigating the recent explosion of violence at the largest migrant camp in France and the country’s largest slum: the Calais “jungle.” Little did they know they’d barely escape death by doing so.
To avoid a missile projected at their car, they swerved and crashed into a truck. Their injuries included one’s head “gashed to the bone after it struck the steering wheel,” another suffered deep cuts to his face, and the third, survived a gash on his head and severe bruising on his back.
According to The Daily Mail, migrants are deliberately causing crashes on the roads by hurling large objects at cars – then sneaking onto trucks caught in the traffic jam. They jump on board to enter illegally into England.
The mayor of Calais, Nathalie Bouchart, has had enough. She says the government is not doing what it said it would do– dismantle the “Jungle.”
She argues, “the government is powerless to the jungle” and that France’s Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, said he would “ensure public order,” which “was not done.” (English translation)
This is true. Migrants continue to arrive daily and violence keeps increasing– because policing has declined.
