States with the Most, Least Number of Gun Owners

Recently, CBS News used the ATF’s National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record to compile a list of what it describes as “the most heavily armed states.” The ATF records the number of guns registered per resident by state.

According to the Independent Journal, the ATF doesn’t include pistols and covers the sale and transfer of the following weapons:

  • machine guns,
  • short-barreled rifles and shotguns,
  • suppressors,
  • destructive devices like bombs and grenades,
  • concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and
  • any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.

The state with the most guns per resident is Wyoming; the state with the least guns per resident is New York.
